Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and Cerebral Hemodynamics

TCD insonation

Experience Transcranial Doppler (TCD) and the cerebral circulation on your computer! We have created an app that is a virtual representation of the brain blood supply and lets you examine this with virtual instrumentation. This app runs on the ubiquitous Windows computer or tablet and is available for download.

In the real world, transcranial Doppler uses ultrasound to look through acoustic windows in the skull. The echoes received from the blood flow are displayed as velocity spectra. TCD is widely used for diagnosis and monitoring of the cerebral circulation. An example of such monitoring with the characteristic Doppler shift sound is shown here.

Transcranially, the ultrasound being attenuated by the skull bones, a Doppler signal is often difficult to acquire and interpret. Education and training is important both for the sonographer and the physician. The virtual experience provided by the TCD Simulator can help you master these techniques and better understand how pathophysiology influences the cerebral blood flow.
